Why Protest Against Veil in France?

Opposing burqa (a kind of veil worn by some Muslim women which covers them from head to toe) French President Nicholas Sarkozi has said that the veil or burqa was not a symbol of any religion. He said that there was no possibility of it being allowed in a secular country. He made these remarks while speaking to the government officers, teachers, students and their parents on the issue of national identity.
Generally the debate over burqa, veil or scarf continues in France since 2004 when female students in educational institutions were banned from wearing scarf or covering of head because of any religious symbol. At that time the ban was restricted to the educational institutions only. It was declared a violation of school uniform or discipline.

New Legislation
Now there is a general debate on the issue and scarf or Burqa is being banned all over the country. To what extend the debate on the scarf or burga has gone in France can be judged by the fact that a committee of the members of the French parliament has been established on the issue. Burqa or veil can be banned through a new legislation if the committee opposes it in its report. Some months back the French President had spoken in favor of the ban during his historical speech in parliament. This is the second occasion when he has opposed burqa.
From this everybody can guess that if the report by the parliamentary committee opposes burqa, which seems probable, and any legislation is done in the parliament in this regard then the president will sign the law at the first opportunity. From his behavior it seems that he is anxiously waiting for it.

Working Against Religious Symbol
One thing is difficult to understand that when the Muslim female students were banned from wearing scarf then it was said that they cannot be allowed to wear scarf as a religious symbol. Now President Sarkozi says that burqa was not a religious symbol. How absurd is it that though scarf was being called a religious symbol while burqa is not being called a religious symbol.
President Sarkozi says that France was a secular country. However, he says that following a religion and having religious outlook will not be allowed. That too is being denied only to the Muslims. Either he should declare his country as an atheistic state and disallow the followers of all religions from leading their lives in accordance with the teachings of their respective religions.
The issue is that why only the religious symbols of the Muslims are being disallowed? Why the religious symbols of the Christians and the Jews are not being banned? What type of a secular country France is where all religions are not allowed to exist with their identity? One after the other restrictions is being imposed on the followers of one religion as if their religious identity has no importance.

Attempt to Oppress Women
The thinking and the way of life which is supported by Sarkozi is not hidden from anybody. It can be his choice not that of others. He cannot impose his choice on all citizens of the country. His is continuously issuing statements against burqa. Sometimes he says that it was an attempt to oppress women. On the other occasions he says it was not a religious symbol. He is trying to forcibly impose his opinion on the women who use burqa in spite of the fact that they do not agree with him.
He is running after burqa. The French government can satisfy itself by giving different arguments and reasons in favor of imposition of ban on scarf and burqa but there are so many contradictions in its thinking that it will become difficult for it to defend itself if it is asked a few questions.

The Real Question
In fact the anti-Islam and Anti-Muslim mindset is working behind the official campaign to make Muslim women immodest. The contradiction in the reasons and objectives of the campaign is natural because of the fact that it is being pursued in blind enmity. The question is: Why the religions identity of the Christians and Jews do not come in the way of the secular character of France?
Why only Islam and the Muslims are being targeted? One is being given concession after concession while restriction after restriction is being imposed on the other. Why there is difference in the policy?
