Declining Standards of Journalism

There have been analysis and discussion in the media. The art of writing column is also not new. After spending forty years in the filed of journalism if we look back we see a huge difference. Earlier people who had command over topics were doing analysis and discussions. Now this situation is like that everyone has adopted the profession. Earlier column writers were full of knowledge and now the story is that they just take a pen along with them every morning. That time no one could think about the news being false.
Now dream has been given the rank of the news. Then, analysis was built on arguments, now they are dependent on "angel's'' whispers. Then, the pen was a pen that was mentioned in the holy Koran "say that in the holy Koran God swore" and now the situation is that pen is used for household work.

Judging Standard of Progress
Some people say that journalism progressed a lot. If the standard of progress is to be judged by the numbers of television channels and newspapers, for sure this profession developed a lot. If the standard is truth and credibility, definitely our standard of journalism is falling down. And the sad part is that nothing has been done to stop that downfall.
The greed for money and the wish to topple governments has practically killed all ethics and traditions. The journalists have become astronomers. That is another thing their stars play false tricks and their parrots also don't tell the truth. There are set patterns and methods to do surveys and research reports.

Competition to Join Journalism
There were five known newspapers four decades ago and now there are almost five hundred. If there was one television channel now there will not be less than five dozens. We have progressed in numbers and that numbers have become the reason of our downfall. No one planned for the human resources and the talent for this fast growing media industry. There were ten talented and deserving people available for one journalistic position, but today not even one talented person is available for ten jobs.
Reason is whoever does not get a job because of competition to join journalism. Every taxi driver, every car dealer, every property adviser, and every doctor, whoever gets rejected for police job because of education or height. They become a senior journalist within two three years, analyst within four to six years, and senior analyst in eight to 10 years. And after 10 to 12 years they insist on calling themselves very senior analyst and even get angry if you don't use this prefix along with his name. Who doesn't know how to write one line is called columnist. And who doesn't know how and where to use comma or full stop gives the formula to solve the problem of the whole nation and the world. He doesn't have a talent to hold a pen fool around the whole nation. He cannot see what is written on the wall, but claims to see behind the wall and can predict anything.

Half-Cooked Intellectual
To enter any profession education, upbringing, experience is asked and there is also a compatibility test. But as once the boom in property business made the land worth peanuts in millions the same way the media boom has made every untalented and unfit people journalist. Those who were not allowed in the newspaper offices have become editors now. And those who were not to be hired by hotels as waiters are analysts...No one knows them in their own profession and they think they are the last word on every subject.
Every half-cooked intellectual, unfit teacher, every failed and mentally corrupt general, every clever serving civil servant or retired civil servant, a person failed in any competitive exam and everyone who doesn't get ob anywhere else gets into journalism and starts showing attitude. He abuses someone one day and gets to hear another the next day, but like the poetry of Ghalib he remains a person who is not disappointed with that.
Every one wishes to get a better protocol than the president, the prime minister, the governor, the chief minister, the chief justice or the Army chief. Everyone bows down in front of him and appreciate his knowledge and intellect. And listen to his point of view carefully and act upon it even keep it in their hearts.

Different Ideology
It is such a strange thing that there is no education, no training, no awareness and no intellect....neither specialization in any profession nor training, but they will discuss every subject. They will poke their nose in every topic and will criticize every person. And they will think they are medical experts, political experts, and armed forces experts. And they will create world problems and also give remedy for that. And above all will insist on taking the medicine prescribed by them. A quack doctor and quack mullahs were considered danger to life. Now quack journalists have taken the responsibility of the country and its stability. It does not mean that no good and educated journalists are present, definitely there are. And they are the pride of this industry, but how many like them would be there? Four out of 10. If 60 people out of 100 do not know a single word about journalism and are mostly uneducated, people will obviously make fun of them. The common people read analysis and dislike them. They listen to it and laughs and loud. They consider their thoughts jokes and ideas riddles. Rickshaw drivers are given an opportunity to drive a Boeing. They will kill themselves and the passengers.
Practically the journalists have become religious teachers (mulla or mufti), no research and no curiosity. They do not want to do hard work, reading. They have no character or knowledge but they have to point finger at every one. And call every person with a different ideology a thief or infidel...Preaching their own ideas under the shield of truth. Wish under the name of the news and on the name of analysis preaching uneducated ideas have become some people's habit. The trust on words in finishing and respect for journalism is also ending...the difference between a journalist and an uneducated religious teacher is that the religious teacher ruins after life and the uneducated journalist is destroying every one's life.
The question is: Who is responsible for this situation? Only working journalists? No, newspaper owners and editors are also opening organizations. But there is no standard to select the workers and to train them. However, this is not a difficult task. In less than one-thirds money out of the money needed to open a newspaper or a channel, is required to open a journalist academy. If one organization does not want to do this alone then at least all the media houses can do it together.
